PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Happy New Year!  What a great program we enjoyed in December with the American Boy Choir as our guests.  Since November your Board has made great strides in preparing for the upcoming membership drive. We now have our own Women’s College Club of Princeton NJ website.  One of our members, Helen Ju, has joined the Board as Webmaster and will keep the Website updated with information she receives from Board members.  A special page will be devoted to the latest complete issue of the Blue Slip. Presently, the Board is engaged in completing the core content of our website and selecting business cards for you to distribute to potential members during the membership drive.  The cards contain our website’s name, logo, and contact information to lead interested women to our new website.

GENERAL MEETING

– February 18, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.- All Saints Church

In 1890 Italian opera was in the doldrums.  Giuseppe Verde was nearly 80 years old, and Italy had been looking for his “heir” for over three decades. Suddenly an unknown 26 year-old from a remote town in Italy’s deep south appeared with a new opera that, in the words of a famous critic, “was like a door that suddenly blew open onto a sealed room.”

The composer was Pietro Mascagni and the opera was “Cavallleria Rusticana”.  Alan Mallach will tell the story of this remarkable work and its composer and how it ushered in the last great period of Italian opera, the era of Puccini and his comtemporaries. Alan Mallach is a concert pianist and scholar on Italian Opera and the author of “Pietro Mascagni and His Operas” and “The Autumn of Italian Opera: from Verismo to Modernism 1890-1915”.  Mr. Mallach, a graduate of Yale University, is a senior fellow of the Brookings Institute in Washington, DC and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
