JANUARY 2016

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I am looking forward to a repeat of last year’s Winter Coffee at the Nassau Club on Monday, January 18, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. This gathering is a great chance to get to know some of the new members and to catch up.  I also like to use it as a chance to find out what we are doing right and where we need to improve.  This year, the membership will find out what our plans are for the 100th Anniversary Party on April 10, 2016, and will also see how individual members can help this effort.  Make sure to bring pictures of new family members.

Also, please bring ideas for trips. On Friday, December 11th, ten of us toured the Firestone Library with Deborah Cordonnier, who introduced us to Karin Trainer, head librarian at Firestone.  We are going back in a couple of months to see more of their collections.

This meeting will be one of sharing ideas and enthusiasms, so be sure to come.

It will not snow.

OPERA GROUP:
Aloha Holloway has been organizing groups for the MET/HD Saturday afternoon opera programs at the Hamilton AMC.

Contact her well ahead of time so she can buy tickets before they are sold out, which is happening more often recently.

January 16, 2016: Les Pecheurs de Perles, by Bizet, with Diana Damrau, Matthew Polenzani, and Mariusz Kwiecien – You will hear the tenor/baritone duet which gives you goose bumps.

January 30, 2016: Turandot, by Puccini, with Marco Berti and Nina Stemme – The

MET’s opulent staging and the tenor’s “Nessun Dorma” are a treat.

McCAFFREY’S RECEIPTS:
Members and their friends can help us increase our Scholarship Fund by collecting their McCaffrey’s register receipts and giving them to us. As part of McCaffrey’s contribution program to non-profit organizations such as ours, the store will donate 1% of the total of all eligible cash register receipts.  No additional discount can be applied, so if you have used another discount such as Senior Tuesday, the receipt is ineligible.  Milk, sushi, and cigarettes do not apply.

LUNCHING OUT GROUP:
Mary Laity will be sending out notices of future luncheon dates and restaurants. Watch for the next email from Mary, call her or email her.

BOOK GROUP:
We shall start the new year on January 29, 2016 at the home of Florence Begun. The book under discussion will be Kristine Hannah’s The Nightingale. This is a fictional story of World War II and the French resistance.

February’s selection will be Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon.  For March, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John LeCarre will be the topic.

A light lunch is always served and we now meet at 12:00 p.m. Please call Florence if you will be joining us.

IN MEMORIAM:
We regret announcing that Margaret “Gig” Ayling died November 27. Her funeral was held December 2 at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Skillman.  Gig was a long-time member of the College Club and organized the duplicate bridge section of our Bridge Fundraisers.

We also regret announcing the death of Mary Jane Fleming on November 21, 2015. Mary Jane was president of the Women’s College Club from 1971 to 1973.
